Late-half goals push Red Flash past Duquesne in opener

BOX SCORE

LORETTO, Pa. (August 17, 2012) – Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) flashed midseason form in Saint Francis University's season-opening 2-0 win over Duquesne at the Stokes Socceplex on Friday.  McKibben, who now stands just one goal shy of the SFU career scoring record, tallied a goal and an assist in the intersectional victory.

The Flash (1-0) poured on the pressure early on, racking up 15 first half shots to the Dukes' two, but was unable to find the back of the net until McKibben netted the eventual game-winner with 11 minutes to go in the opening half.

SFU goalkeeper Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) was tested with more frequency in the second half, making five of her seven stops in the period.  Duquesne (0-1) outshot the Red Flash 11-to-7 in the second, but Saint Francis tallied 22 shots to the Dukes' 13 on the afternoon.

Momentum eventually swung back to SFU as Beatriz Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) furnished the icing on the cake in the 84th minute.  Bea controlled the rebound from a mid-range shot from McKibben and slipped it past Duquesne keeper Ashley Szalwinski to set the final score.

McKibben totaled half of SFU's 22 shots, four of which were on goal.  Paige Maroney led the Dukes with six shots, including four on goal.

The Red Flash resumes its season next week with its first trip to California since the 2006 season.  Saint Francis will match up with San Diego State on Wednesday before battling Long Beach on Friday.  Both games kick off at 7 p.m.
