Men's golf captures second consecutive team title

ALTOONA, Pa. (Sept. 15, 2012) - For the second consecutive tournament, the Saint Francis University men's golf team took home both the team and individual title, this time at the Penn State Altoona Invitational.

The Red Flash once again fielded two teams and it was the 'Red' squad who were victorious in the 12-team field with a one-day score of 303. Behind the 'Red' squad was the SFU 'White' team and their total 316, finishing eight shots better than third place Penn State Behrend. On the par 72 course it was freshman Chris Stricek (Binghamton, N.Y./Windsor) who earned his first solo individual tournament win in his young collegiate career after shooting a one-over 73. On Friday, Stricek tied for individual medalist honors at the MAC Invitational.

Along with Stricek on the 'Red' team was second place finisher James Ferguson (Altoona, Pa./Tyrone) who carded a 74 on Saturday. Kevin Fawcett (London, Ontario, Canada/Oakridge Secondary) and his 75 earned him a third place showing in the 64-player field. Kyle Krout (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) and Vincent Adams (Boisbriand, Quebec/John Abbot College) tied for 10th after rounds of 81 and round out the list of the 'Red' team participants.

Jeff Chastel (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Jeremy Merich (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) led the way for the 'White' squad as they came in a tie for fifth place with scores of 78. One stroke behind them was freshman Edward Maruca (Ebensburg, Pa./Central Cambria) whose 79 earned him eighth place in his collegiate debut. Fellow freshman Shane Crampton (London, Ontario, Canada/Saunders Secondary)'s tournament showing placed him in a tie for 10th with an 81.

Saint Francis hits the course next at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational next Sunday for a two-day tournament in Rehoboth Beach, Del.
