BOX SCORE BETHLEHEM, Pa. (Sept. 2, 2012) – The Saint Francis University field hockey picked up two goals from rookie
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) as SFU knocked off in-state rival Lehigh Sunday, 4-2.
The Red Flash (3-1, 0-0) responded to their first loss of the season on Saturday with their best offense performance of the season against the Mountain Hawks (0-4, 0-0).
Kellie Mason (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich),
Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) and Adamshick all score first-half goals for the Flash and placed Lehigh in a hole it could not climb out of as SFU earned its best four-game start in program history.
"I am really pleased with this team's ability to re-focus on the next opponent. Yesterday's game was a tough one, but we came out with a renewed energy for today's match," head coach
Stacey Bean said. "Lehigh provided challenges for us in a number of areas but we adjusted well. We still have a lot of work to do as the season goes on, but we are making progress each game. We were blessed today with yet another tremendous group in the stands cheering for us this weekend. Our team feeds off the enthusiasm of the crowd, it's like we're playing a home game even on the road."
Mason started the first half scoring with her first tally of the season coming at the 11:37 mark. The senior picked up a lose ball in front of the keeper and used a low hard shot to give the Red Flash an early 1-0 advantage. Saint Francis extended its lead less than five minutes later as the Flash penalty corner attack continued its hot start.
Tia Dudukovich (Port Matilda, Pa./State College Area) triggered the play to Makea, who used a direct shot from inside the arc to give SFU a 2-0 advantage at the 16:27 mark.
Lehigh responded less than a minute later as Lindsay Metzger carrier the ball inside the arc and used a solid pass to find Kimberly Eng, who cut the Red Flash advantage to 2-1 with just under 20 minutes left in the first half. Adamshick picked up the first goal of her college career at the 29:24 mark of the first, off of a broken play.
Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) came out of a scramble in front of the cage and found Adamshick, who registered SFU's third goal of the half against Lehigh goalkeeper Sophie Fitzpatrick. The Flash appeared to be headed to halftime with a two-goal advantage until a late penalty corner gave the Mountain Hawks a chance they would not squander. With under a minute remaining in the half, Abby Sprinkel fired a shot that picked up a tip from Alex Beatson and slipped pass SFU goalkeeper Katelyn Vitali. The late first-half goal gave Lehigh hope heading into half down just one score, 3-2.
However the Red Flash defense stepped up its play in the second stanza and limited Lehigh to just three shots on cage, all of which were turned away by Vitali. Late in the second half, Lehigh started to commit more players forward and the Red Flash were able to take advantage.
Jocelyn Scillia (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) trigged the offense attack for SFU in transition as she found Adamshick, who tallied her second goal of the match to seal the victory for the Flash.
Saint Francis returns to the road Friday with a trip to in-state rival Villanova for a 7 p.m. contest with the Wildcats.
