Stifling defense paces Red Flash in 1-0 win against LIU

McKibben eyes up her game-winning shot late in the first half
BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2012) – Junior Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) scored her sixth goal of the season on Sunday afternoon to lift Saint Francis U to a 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn at the Stokes Soccerplex.

While McKibben generated the game's only offense, it was the smothering Red Flash defense that carried the day.  SFU allowed only six Blackbird shots all afternoon while goalkeeper Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) was called on to make three saves.

On the day, the Flash (5-4-1; 2-0-0 NEC) held a 15-to-6 advantage in shots and attempted the game's only four corner kicks.

The Red Flash looked dominant in the first half, racking up 13 shots to LIUB's two with McKibben coming through with the game-winner in the 37th minute.  Junior defender Alecia McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Donegal ) set up the score with a high, arcing pass from midfield that fell at the feet of McKibben who, several strides later, deposited a her shot into the lower left corner of the goal.

The assist was the second of the season for McNiff, who is posting a strong follow-up to last year's Northeast Conference defender-of-the-year-winning campaign.  For McKibben, it was the fourth-straight Red Flash goal during which she picked up a point.

Blackbirds keeper Jennifer Bannon took the loss, while Butcher posted her second straight shutout.  Butcher's 13 career shutouts tie her for second all-time in SFU history.  Melanie Stockman holds the Red Flash record with 19.

The loss drops LIU Brooklyn to 2-7-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in NEC play.

Saint Francis returns to action on Friday when it visits Bryant (6-5; 1-1 NEC) for a 3 p.m. contest.
