Flash outlasts Sacred Heart to clinch fourth NEC win

BOX SCORE FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Sept. 30, 2012) – The Saint Francis University women's soccer team outlasted both Mother Nature and the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Sunday afternoon, walking away with 1-0 double-OT win.  With the victory, the Red Flash raised its record to 7-4-1 on the season and 4-0 in Northeast Conference play.

The Pioneers (4-7; 1-2 NEC) were shutout at home for the second straight game, while SFU blanked its fourth consecutive league opponent.  Like the SHU defense, the weather also delayed the eventual outcome with a lengthy second-half lightning stoppage.

Tesa Mckibben allowed the Red Flash to walk off with the win, scoring in the 114th minute of the game. The goal was created by a perfect through ball from junior forward Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus) that allowed Mckibben to get passed the defense and squeak the ball past SHU goalkeeper Sydney Judkins to win the game.

Flash goalkeeper Brianna Butcher (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) turned in another a great game in net, notching 14 saves in the victory. Both teams had their opportunities in regulation but could not find the back of the net.

Saint Francis had some opportunities over the course of the contest, with the first coming in the ninth minute of the first half on a on a header that sailed wide right.

In the second overtime Laura Stayrook (Johnstown, Pa./Richland) had a near miss as well, almost putting one in from about 35 yards away in which the ball skidded off the wet turf and hit the cross bar.

Saint Francis returns to action on Friday when it hosts Central Conn. State for a noon matchup.
