Webber and Valcicak Shutdown Bulldogs

BOX SCORE LORETTO Pa. - (Oct. 13, 2013) Four minutes into the second period, Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) placed a corner-kick deep into the Bryant box, allowing Bryan Causey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) to head Medina's ball into freshman defender Jack Webber (Bernville, Pa./Tulpehocken), who headed Causey's ball past the diving Bryant keeper. Medina and Causey were credited assists on Webber's game-winner. The Saint Francis men's soccer team picked up their first Northeast Conference win 1-0, improving to (8-2-3; 1-0-1) as Bryant dropped to (4-7; 1-1).

"The guys played really hard, I thought the first half was pretty even," said Head Coach Michael Casper. "We had some pretty good chances, but overall it was mostly even." "Something we've been stressing recently is the set pieces and having our big guys go up there and win the ball and be able to score on set pieces." "I was really happy for Pablo to whip in a good pass for Causey and for Jack to touch it home."

Senior goalie Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) made history Sunday afternoon recording his 18th career shutout, placing him a-top Saint Francis's shutout leader board. Valcicak recorded his fifth shutout of the season, improving to 6-2-3 on the season. Recording one save on the afternoon, Valcicak was backed by an outstanding defensive core that shutdown several Bryant threats. In 1061 minutes Valcicak has encountered 128 shots, allowing a meager six goals with a .880 save percentage.

Both teams mustered two-shots apiece in the first half, ending 0-0 in an offensive struggle. Saint Francis controlled the second half of the physical game, taking four corner kicks to the Bulldogs one.

SFU and BRY drew 13 fouls apiece in the aggressive match. Pedro Ferreira for Bryant received the lone yellow card on the afternoon.

"I thought we created a number of good chances tonight," said Coach Casper.  "I'd be more concerned if we weren't creating chances." "The fact is that we are creating good opportunities, we are getting good looks, and I believe that the boys are going to be able to convert those into goals."

Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) led the team in shots with five, three coming on goal. Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) and Medina both chipped in two shots respectively.

Medina picked up his second assist on the season.

Saint Francis overpowered the Bulldogs 10-to-3 in shots and 7-to-3 in corner kicks.

The Red Flash hit the road Friday night, as they face St. Francis Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
