BOX SCORE UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – (Oct. 2, 2013) Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored his first goal of the season giving the Red Flash a 1-0 double over-time victory over Penn State University. Saint Francis made history beating Penn State Wednesday night; prior to this match Saint Francis was 0-10 versus Penn State.
"I am really proud of the guys tonight," said Head Coach
Michael Casper. "They worked so hard, stuck together, and earned an excellent shutout victory over a very good team."
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) played a ball in behind several Penn State (6-3-1) defenders, drawing keeper Andrew Wolverton out of the box, allowing Byers to breach the PSU defenders. Once past the first line of defenders Byers neatly toed the deflected ball over the line, giving Saint Francis (7-2-1) the win in the 101st minute of over-time.
Penn State had its chances to convert in the first and second half, but keeper
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) answered with four stops, two coming in each regulation half.
The Nittany Lions out shot the Frankies 17-to-7, but the Red Flash made their shots count, placing the only shot in over-time between the pipes.
Valcicak is now tied with Brad Williams in career shutouts totaling 17. He has four shutouts this season and improves his record to 5-2.
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) paced the Red Flash offense with four shot attempts, including one on-target chance.
"I am excited for our guys and really pleased that they were rewarded for putting forth an excellent effort," said Coach Casper.
Saint Francis returns home following the 1-0 victory for three consecutive games. SFU matches up against St. Bonaventure at the Stokes Soccerplex Sunday at 2 p.m.
