BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – (Oct. 6, 2013) On a hot and humid Sunday afternoon Saint Francis tied 1-1 with St. Bonaventure ending the non-conference schedule for the Red Flash. The Bonnies capitalized early on the Red Flash scoring twenty-three seconds into the match.
The Bonnies (6-4-1) advanced the ball up field, on a pass from James Reed, who connected with Brad Vanino for the goal. Saint Francis (7-2-2) controlled the ball the majority of the first half while holding an advantage of 8-to-4 in shots and 4-to-1 in corner kicks.
"Today was a frustrating day as we lacked the energy and quality that was needed to win the game," said Head Coach
Michael Casper. "We have to earn every minute, every half, and make sure we give ourselves the best opportunity to win."
As the first period came to a close, junior
Bryan Causey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) latched onto a deflected ball deep inside the Bonnies box and slotted the equalizer past keeper Jeremy Figler with two seconds to spare.
SBU set the tone with their pressure early in the second period, but to no avail, as keeper
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) recorded five saves, totaling a season-high nine in the match.
St. Bonaventure had the livelier start in the first overtime period with three shots and three corner-kicks to SFU's one. Saint Francis responded in the second overtime period taking three shots more than the Bonnies. Both teams could not find a winner, settling for a 1-1 tie after playing the allotted 110 minutes.
Both squads created several scoring opportunities as Saint Francis outdid St. Bonaventure 20-to-18 in shots taken. Both teams shared corner-kicks with eight each.
Senior
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) and
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) led the Frankies with four shots apiece.
"We will regroup and be ready for Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday," said Coach Casper.
Saint Francis opens Northeast conference play on Friday at 4 p.m. against the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights on the Stokes Soccerplex.
