Makea’s Two Goals Lifts SFU Over Saint Louis

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 1, 2013) – Behind a two-goal effort from Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College), the Saint Francis University field hockey team edged Saint Louis, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.

The Red Flash (8-7, 3-3) held a commanding 20-7 advantage in shots against the Billikens (1-18, 0-6) during the contest. SFU also led in penalty corners, 11-3.

Saint Francis saw a few early scoring chances as Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) recorded a couple shots that were saved by SLU goalkeeper Tori Westhead.

Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) put one home at the 22-minute mark off a penalty corner feed from Nikki Snyder (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) to give SFU the 1-0 lead. Both teams traded scoring chances the remainder of the half, and the Flash took the one-goal lead into halftime.

Just nine minutes into the second period, it was Makea again who notched another goal after she dribbled past a few Billiken defenders and SFU took the 2-0 advantage.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Meredith Jeffers scored for Saint Louis to narrow the deficit to one. The Flash tightened up their defensive effort again and did not allow another shot on goal the remainder of the game.

Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) finished with three saves in the win for SFU, while Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) posted a game-high 12 shots with seven of them connecting on goal.

Saint Francis will wrap up its 2013 regular season on Sunday as Massachusetts comes to Sweet Loretto for a match-up scheduled for Noon.
