Red Flash Seniors Lead The Way

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – (Nov. 10, 2013) Senior day was a success in Loretto as David Trunzo (State College, Pa./State College), Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny), and Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) guided the Red Flash to an emphatic, 4-1, triumph over Robert Morris. The Saint Francis men's soccer team tied a program best with their 11th win as they advance to the Northeast Conference Tournament held in New Britain, Connecticut.

Saint Francis started off in style when Mitch Kavlick (Erie, Pa./Erie McDowell), Kolarac, and Trunzo all combined to give the Red Flash the lead two minutes into the affair. Kavlick and Kolarac linked up before crossing to the waiting Trunzo, who volleyed home his first goal of the day. Trunzo and Kolarac continued to dazzle the home crowd on Senior Day as they were both involved in putting the Red Flash two goals too the good.

"It was a great start scoring the goal two minutes in," said head coach Michael Casper. "It was something we really wanted to try to do."  "Robert Morris is a good team and really put us under pressure, but we found the second goal which gave us a little cushion."

Saint Francis went into half time, 2-0, recording nine shots and three corner-kicks. The SFU defensive pressure kept the Colonials in check, limiting them to five shots in the first half. Valcicak picked up three saves in the first 45-minutes stopping any Colonial threat.

Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) claimed his fifth assist of the season in the 14th minute of the second half. His hard work was rewarded after dicing through some RMU players, before driving a low ball across the box, which in turn was rebounded out by RMU's goalkeeper. Kolarac was on hand to place the ball into the open goal giving Saint Francis a, 3-0, lead.

Neco Brett later split the Red and White defense scoring the lone Robert Morris goal to end SFU's chances of a shutout.

Kolarac ended his senior day in style, by expertly bending a ball into the bottom corner, extending the lead to, 4-1, and thus ending any chance of an RMU comeback.

Valcicak marked his ninth win of the season in the match.

Kolarac lead the team in shots with six, four of which were on goal giving him a total of six points.

"In the second half we were able to find goal number three and goal number four to really put the game away, said coach Casper." "The fact that we were able to defend very well and convert on our chances is what made the difference today."

Saint Francis travels to New Britain, Connecticut as they face off against the Bryant Bulldogs in the semi-final of the NEC Championship.
