Red Flash Fall In PK’s

BOX SCORE NEW BRITIAN, Conn. – (Nov. 15, 2013) The Saint Francis U men's soccer team ends its season in a heart breaking loss to the Bryant Bulldogs in penalty kicks, 3-0.

The game is officially scored as a, 2-2, tie that ended in penalty kicks favoring Bryant, 3-0.

"I am so gutted right now for our team and for everyone of the guys," said head coach Michael Casper. "I felt like we put a lot of pressure on Bryant and were unfortunate not to score a couple more goals." Conceding on two set piece goals, especially when we haven't given up a set piece goal all season is really painful and made the difference in the game for them."

Bryant notched an early lead over the Red Flash off a clever goal on a set ball eight minutes into the opening half. Pedro-Lucas Ferreira scored the goal, giving the Bulldogs an early, 1-0, advantage.

After a SFU yellow card in the box, Bryant was awarded a penalty kick. Conner Norat curved the ball at the bottom right corner of the goal and Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) guessed right preventing the Bulldogs from opening up a, 2-0, lead.

A finesse ball from Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) tied the game at, 1-1. Kolarac drilled the ball past the Bryant keeper from 18 yards out swinging the momentum to the Flash.

Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) curved a set kick into the box giving Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) the angle needed to head the ball into the top left corner of the Bryant goal, giving the Frankies a 2-1 advantage.

Bryant earned the equalizer in the match with 1:18 remaining off a set piece goal from Kyle Jester to Norat, who headed the ball past the out stretched hands of Valcicak. This sent the game into overtime and doused SFU's momentum.

The first overtime posed scoring opportunities for both squads, but neither team found the back of the net.

Mirroring the first overtime the second ended in the same result as the first, leading to penalty kicks.

The Bulldogs made their first three penalty kicks giving Bryant all of the momentum and the eventual win, 3-0.

"Losing in penalties is never easy and I felt like this team deserved more, but that's how it goes sometimes, said coach Casper. "Two of the things I am most upset about is the fact that we won't have training tomorrow as I love coming to work with this group of guys everyday and the second is the fact that our seniors have played their last game in a Red Flash uniform." "They all mean so much to me and I am so thankful for all they have given me and the program."

Bryant moves on to the Championship game Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against St. Francis Brooklyn.
