BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2013) – The Saint Francis University field hockey team held a two-goal lead against No. 12 Massachusetts, but fell 4-3 in overtime, on Sunday afternoon in the regular season finale.
The Red Flash (8-8, 3-4) strung together three consecutive goals in just six minutes early in the second period to take a 3-1 lead, but the Minutewomen (16-4, 7-0) answered with two late goals and the eventual overtime winner.
Izzie Delario scored the first goal of the contest 18 minutes into the first half to give UMass the 1-0 lead, which they held for the entire period. Saint Francis led in shots 7-4 and in penalty corners 5-0 after the first period.
The Flash came out firing in the second half, it was
Elizabeth Momeyer (Harrison City, Pa./Penn Trafford) who started the rally for SFU off a penalty corner attempt, and assists were awarded to
Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) and
Nikki Snyder (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman).
Selena Adamshick (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman) scored just over a minute later off a long pass from
Lottie Chipego (Dallas, Pa./Lake-Lehman) and SFU took the 2-1 lead.
Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) broke the game open for SFU after she received a nice baseline feed from
Mackenzie Wirth (Thompsontown, Pa./Greenwood) and the Flash led 3-1 with 25 minutes to play.
UMass racked up seven penalty corners in the final 25 minutes and used one of them to scored its second goal at the 57-minute mark. Lindsay Bowman scored the equalizer four minutes later and the match went into overtime.
Both teams traded scoring opportunities in the overtime period, SFU's best chance came off a shot from
Jocelyn Scillia (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) that was saved by UMass keeper Sam Carlino. A minute later Delario scored her second goal of the afternoon and the Minutewomen won the game, 4-3.
Due to the Atlantic 10 Conference regulations, Saint Francis is not eligible for postseason play during its first season in the league. The Flash finished with eight wins in 2013, including three conference wins.
