BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 3, 2013) –
Tesa McKibben (Cogan Station, Pa./Montoursville) and the Saint Francis U women's soccer team aren't ready to kiss game days in Sweet Loretto goodbye. That much was obvious from the opening whistle of the Red Flash's 4-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday at the Stokes Soccerplex.
McKibben padded her NCAA-leading career points total with seven (3 goals; 1 assist) and SFU out-shot the Knights 25-to-5 to clinch its third Northeast Conference Regular Season Title in as many seasons.
"I am extremely proud of this team," said Saint Francis coach
Brenda van Stralen. "Today was an unbelievable performance against a very good FDU team."
"It's a great accomplishment to win three regular season championships in a row. Now we need to carry this momentum into the tournament on Friday."
The Red Flash will enter this weekend's NEC Tournament as the league's top seed and has drawn #4 Central Connecticut in Friday's semifinal. Saint Francis will host the three-game tournament, which also features #3 LIU Brooklyn and #2 FDU.
On Sunday, which was also Senior Day for the Flash, McKibben opened the scoring in the sixth minute, with assists from fellow seniors
Ellie Gavin (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) and
Barbara Maros de Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Sagrado Coraco de Jesus).
Gavin pushed the SFU advantage to 2-0 in the 28th minute with her fourth goal of the season after controlling a touch from McKibben. Barely eight minutes later, Maros de Carvalho connected with McKibben to set the 3-0 halftime score.
Amanda Goulet put Fairleigh Dickinson on the board 11 minutes into the second half by heading in a corner kick by Kasey Schiavoni. The goal marked the Knights' only shot on goal on the afternoon in a superb SFU defensive outing headlined by center back
Alecia McNiff (Marietta, Pa./Donegal ).
Saint Francis answered in the 65th minute as McKibben dashed any FDU comeback hopes by completing the hat trick with helpers from Gavin and Maros de Carvalho.
With three assists in the match, Maros de Carvalho raised her season point total to 25 – 11 of which have come in the past three games.
