BOX SCORE NEWARK, Del. (March 16, 2013) – Playing in its first day at the University of Delaware tournament, the Saint Francis U softball team defeated Villanova 3-1 in the morning but its afternoon matchup with Norfolk State was cancelled after two innings due to rain in the area.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) (9-4) pitched yet another gem in the early game against Villanova (9-8). The right hander threw all seven innings and yielded just one earned run on four hits. She lowered her season earned run average to 2.00 and has not given up more than two earned runs in her last 15 appearances.
The Wildcats did manage to score their solo run first in the game by way of a RBI double to right field in the top of the second. However, Villanova could not assemble many more scoring chances in the game.
The Red Flash (14-7) answered the Wildcats run with two of their own in the next half inning. With two on and one out, senior
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) lined a single to center that scored
Shannon Tomasello (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) from second. After
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) collected a single of her own to load the bases,
Samantha Thomas (Sterling, Va./Park View) put the ball in play and reached on a fielding error by Villanova's third baseman that scored an additional run.
In the bottom of inning three, the Flash tacked on its final run of the contest in somewhat of an unconventional fashion.
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) and
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) produced back-to-back base knocks and
Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif./Temescal Canyon) was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases for
Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson). Darneille reached base safely on a catcher's interference call, allowing Cosentino to cross home plate and make it 3-1 SFU.
In Villanova's final inning, DeVries shut the door on any chance of a come-from-behind victory by getting a pop fly, line out and ground out to end the game.
In the second game of the afternoon versus Norfolk State, Saint Francis enjoyed a 2-1 lead after two full innings of play before the game was suspended and eventually cancelled. It will not be made up.
Saint Francis is scheduled for one more day at the University of Delaware tournament when they take on Hartford Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
