BOX SCORE 2 NEWARK, Del. (March 17, 2013) – On the final day of the University of Delaware tournament, the Saint Francis U softball team split a pair of games on Sunday, defeating Hartford 2-0 but falling 7-2 to host Delaware.
Things got underway early Sunday morning for the Red Flash (15-8) in its first game with Hartford (5-13). SFU collected just two hits in the ball game but managed to get a couple of runs across the plate in the fifth inning, taking advantage of defensive errors committed by the Hawks.
With two outs in the bottom of inning five,
Samantha Thomas (Sterling, Va./Park View) drew a walk and advanced on the base paths thanks to a single by
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle). Both runners came around to score on the play by way of two Hawks errors.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) (10-5) earned her 10
th pitching victory of the season after throwing the complete game shutout with six strikeouts. The other SFU hit in the game came off the bat of
Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson), a double in the second inning.
Later in the afternoon versus tournament host Delaware (17-3) the game remained a tight battle between the two schools until the Blue Hens tacked on runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
It was the Blue Hens who struck first in the game, scoring one run in the bottom of the second.
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) though doubled in
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) in the next frame to knot the score at 1-1. In a game where no errors occurred, it was all about timely hits and Delaware collecting a few of those in the third that allowed them to jump out to a 3-1 advantage.
The Red Flash cut the lead to one in their portion of the fourth, but it would be the last run they'd score in the game.
Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) led off with a single and moved all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) and a wild pitch.
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) came through with one out and doubled to left field, scoring Blattenberger.
Delaware's offense produced at least one run in the next three innings, which gave them the 7-2 lead. DeVries was dealt the loss after giving up three earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched.
Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) entered the game in the third as relief for DeVries and threw the final 3.2 innings.
For the weekend trip to Delaware, SFU built up a 4-1 mark in five games played.
Saint Francis travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. this Tuesday for a doubleheader with the Pitt Panthers beginning at 3 p.m.
