BOX SCORE NEWARK, N.J. (March 2, 2013) - The Saint Francis U men's volleyball team earned its third consecutive win after dropping Rutgers-Newark in three sets, 25-17, 25-17, 25-16.
10 different Red Flash (8-10, 5-4) players recorded a kill in the match and they made quick work of the Scarlet Raiders (2-8, 0-6), who are yet to earn a win in EIVA play.
Rutgers-Newark led first in set one, SFU took their first lead at 9-8 after a block from
Colin Sherwin (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep). The Raiders regained the lead, but then SFU went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-11 lead and force a Rutgers timeout. Out of the break, SFU went on to score four of the next five points to put the first set out of reach.
SFU led early in set two and was sparked by a 4-0 run to extend the lead to 10-6.
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) later registered back-to-back kills to give SFU a 16-10 lead and Rutgers could never regain any momentum.
The Flash led big early in the third set after a kill from Kochan, set-up by Mike Kresch. SFU extended the lead to 10 after a combined block from Kochan and
Lucas Behringer (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) and that would be enough to take the third and final set.
Kyle Beatty (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) led SFU with seven kills, while
Logan Patterson (Derry, Pa./Derry Area) and
Adam Roche (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) each added six.
Mark Kochan (Towaco, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) finished with five kills
and five blocks.
SFU finished with six service aces, the highest total this season. SFU also totaled 22 total blocks and the defense forced Rutgers-Newark to a dreadful .023 team hitting percentage.
Saint Francis will return to action March 13 as they face Loyola-Chicago in a non-conference match-up at 7 p.m.
