BOX SCORE 2 BALTIMORE, Md. (March 2, 2013) – The Saint Francis U softball team recorded a couple of huge innings late in Saturday's games at the UMBC Spring Classic, to lift them to a pair of wins and even their record for the season at 4-4. SFU defeated Morgan State 9-1 and UMBC 8-1.
Against Morgan State (1-11), the Red Flash (4-4) used an eight-run top of the seventh to give them the victory and a seven-run top of the sixth secured the team a win over tournament host UMBC (3-10). All runs were scored with two outs in each inning.
In the morning contest with Morgan State the game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area)'s sacrifice fly to right scored
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) from third. The Bears tied things up in their half of the sixth but the momentum swing was short lived.
With two outs in the top of the seventh in a 1-1 ballgame and a runner on second, senior
Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson) broke the tie when she poked a double to the right field fence, scoring
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline). That would be all the Red Flash would need in this one but the offense did not stop there.
After a couple of singles and speedy running on the base paths,
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) collected an opposite field double to left that allowed two more runs to cross the plate. With Parsons on second,
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) stepped in and sent her first homerun of the season down the left field line. Cosentino followed with a homerun of her own, a solo shot also to left that put the score at 9-1 Flash.
Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) got the start and the no decision in the circle after tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just one hit. Morgan State's lone run went unearned.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) was the pitcher of record in the game and threw a nearly flawless 1.2 innings of relief work with two strikeouts.
Game two of the doubleheader versus UMBC produced a similar feel with the teams deadlocked in a 1-1 tie as the game neared its conclusion. With two outs and
Shannon Tomasello (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) standing on second,
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) roped a double through the left side that allowed Tomasello to make a play at the plate. Obstruction was called on UMBC's catcher which allowed the run to count and the inning to continue.
Immediately following that play,
Samantha Thomas (Sterling, Va./Park View) got in on the scoring action after she flew down the line to beat the throw for an infield single which allowed Creciun to come home. Kachnovitz secured another RBI thanks to a rocket shot up the middle. With the bases loaded, Neeb came through with a two-RBI double to left center.
DeVries got the call in game two and bumped her overall record to 3-1 on the year after pitching a phenomenal game. The rookie right-hander allowed just the one earned run on two hits and struck out six batters. What's more impressive is that all six strikeouts caught the hitters looking.
Saint Francis concludes play at the UMBC Spring Classic Sunday morning. The Flash will resume Friday's suspended game against Saint Peter's at 8:30 a.m. and play the Peahens once more immediately afterwards.
