BOX SCORE 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 5, 2013) – The Saint Francis U softball team opened play at the Rebel Games Tuesday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Tennessee Martin and shutting out Grambling State 5-0.
Predominantly a pitcher's duel in game one against the Skyhawks (10-6), neither team could get any runs on the scoreboard until the fourth frame. Tennessee Martin's Kenzi Tate took SFU starter
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) deep to center for the solo shot that put the Skyhawks up 1-0.
UT Martin added one more run in their half of the sixth to earn the two-run victory.
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) doubled out to right field to start the bottom of the seventh but was left stranded in scoring position after three consecutive outs.
DeVries (5-2) took the loss in the game despite surrendering just one earned run on four hits throughout her seven innings pitched.
It also took until the top of the fourth in game two versus Grambling State (2-12) to see run production, this time in favor of the Red Flash (7-5). Reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Week
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) led off the inning with a shot that tipped off the left center field fence and bounced over for the homerun, her third of the season.
After
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) singled and Neeb collected another double to put runners in scoring position,
Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif./Temescal Canyon) drove in Cosentino with an RBI single to center.
Aly Ramsaier (Mesa, Ariz./Mountain View) then lifted a sacrifice fly to the outfield that scored Neeb from third, her first collegiate RBI.
SFU plated two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth to seal the deal against the Tigers.
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) was to thank for one of those runs as she lined her first career homerun to straightaway center.
DeVries picked up the win over the Tigers, giving five wins to her credit thus far. This week's NEC Pitcher of the Week threw four innings, did not allow a hit and struck out six.
Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) tossed a two-hit relief outing in three innings of work, striking out two batters.
Saint Francis continues its run at the Rebel Games on Wednesday with a 9 a.m. game against South Dakota and an 11 a.m. contest versus Holy Cross.
