BOX SCORE 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 8, 2013) - For the first time during the Rebel Games, the Saint Francis U softball team swept a pair of games, scoring late in dramatic fashion to defeat Niagara 7-6 in eight innings and holding on against Holy Cross for a 10-7 win.
With SFU's two wins on Friday, they move their record to 10-6 overall, its best start through 16 games since the 2002 campaign.
In the early morning contest with Niagara (2-10), the Saint Francis offense came alive in the bottom of the third, putting up a three-spot.
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) connected on her team-leading fourth homerun of the young season with a shot to left field that scored her and
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle).
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) followed that up with a double to center and was brought around to score on a single by
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline).
With the Red Flash up 4-0, the Purple Eagles cut the lead to just one run, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the sixth. Niagara then proceeded to tie things up in their half of the seventh after a triple to right center set up the score.
As the game headed into extra innings, Niagara used a few extra base hits to take a 6-4 lead over the Flash in the top of the eighth. By international tie break rules, Neeb was placed on second to start the inning. After back-to-back one-out walks loaded the bases, senior
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) smoked a hard hit ground ball to third base, cutting the score to 6-5. With two outs and the bases still loaded, Parsons came through in the clutch with a walk off single to left and thanks to aggressive base running, two runs crossed the plate for the 7-6 win.
In game two the Flash enjoyed a 6-0 lead after two innings of play and carried a 10-0 lead into the final frame. Struggles arose in the bottom of the seventh however and Holy Cross (3-6) plated seven runs, but the lead was too great and SFU held on for the win. More information will be posted on this game when it becomes available.
Saint Francis concludes its run at the Rebel Games on Saturday with a 9 a.m. game with Creighton and an 11 a.m. contest versus Detroit Mercy.
