Saint Francis welcomes the Bucknell Univeristy Bison to Loretto this afternoon for a pair of non-conference games. Last season here at Red Flash Field, SFU swept the Bison by the finals of 6-0 and 9-1 in a shortened six innings.
Bucknell does hold the edge however in the all-time series by a 22-8 margin.
SAINT FRANCIS' LAST TIME OUT...
The Red Flash lost two Northeast Conference contests to Robert Morris on Tuesday at Red Flash Field. The Colonials bested SFU 8-1 in game one and came back to win game two 6-4. RMU's sophomore pitcher Nicole Sleith took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning in the first game, but
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) broke it up with a leadoff single to right field.
Saint Francis grabbed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Cosentino double to left center that scored
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow). SFU took that lead into the final inning but a Colonials grand slam put RMU up 6-2. The Flash struck for two more runs in their half of the seventh.
BUCKNELL'S LAST TIME OUT...
On Sunday, the Bucknell Bison took a pair of Patriot League games from Lafayette to claim its first sweep since the 2005 season. Bucknell defeated the Leopards 4-0 and 8-3 in the two games. Lafayette collected 10 hits between both games, but scored most of its three runs off of Bison defensive errors.
Freshman pitcher Amanda Fazio comes into today's games having not allowed a run in her previous two outings. Bucknell's offensive strength this season is its ability to hit doubles as three players have seven two baggers.
OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION
In terms of league wide statistics, the Red Flash rank in the top-five in the Northeast Conference in nearly all major offensive categories. SFU has pounded out a NEC-best 297 hits on the season and rank third behind conference leader Central Connecticut and Monmouth in runs scored. In the extra base hit categories, Saint Francis ranks third in homeruns (24) and fourth in doubles (44) and triples (5).
HIT, RUN, SCORE
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) continues to be a staple to the SFU offense from all angles. The junior shortstop ranks third on the team in hits (35) and leads the way in RBI (23) and runs scored (26). As evidenced by her offensive numbers, 11 drawn walks and nine stolen bases this season, Kachnovitz finds ways to get on and get around the base paths to give SFU prime scoring chances game in and game out.
QUIET SENIOR YEAR
Senior outfielder
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) is quietly having one of the most consistent seasons as a member of the Red Flash. Garcia ranks second on the team with a .321 batting average and has collected 27 hits this season. The California native is one RBI shy of tying her season-best mark of 12. Hitting safely in eight of the last 10 games, Garcia has had four multi-hit games during that span as well.
REX BACK TO FORM
The SFU lineup has seen a lot of sophomore
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) as of late. Rex has filled in nicely at third base and has picked up both her offense and pitching. At Central Connecticut, Rex bombed three homeruns on the day, including the first grand slam of her career. Since her at-bats versus Youngstown State, Rex is batting .282 with 14 RBI and 11 hits. In the circle, despite being dealt the loss in the nightcap versus Robert Morris on Tuesday, Rex tossed all seven innings and was charged with just two earned runs.
