Pioneers Strong First Half Hands SFU Road Loss

BOX SCORE FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 19, 2013) – The Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team lost on the road against Sacred Heart, 16-7, on Friday afternoon.

The Red Flash (4-12, 1-7) were outscored 9-3 by the Pioneers (5-9, 4-4) in the first half and struggled to mount a comeback.

Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the first half just two minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead. SFU answered back with a goal from Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East) three minutes later. The Pioneers then scored four unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead with 16:50 to play in the period.

Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) netted her 13th goal of the season and Fini put another one on the board to put the Flash within two at the 11:30 mark. Sacred Heart again scored four consecutive goals and held a 9-3 at halftime.

The Pioneers extended its lead to eight with two quick goals to start the second half. Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) then scored her 22nd and 23rd goals of the season to put the Flash within six at 11-5 midway through the second half.

SHU was able to score four more straight goals to take a 15-5 lead with 13:30 to play. Olivia Pittman (Annapolis, Md./Saint Mary's) and Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) each scored late to narrow the deficit for SFU.

Schaaf finished with five points (one goal, four assists) to lead the Red Flash. Rachel Larson (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) added four draw controls and an assist. Savannah Shores (Trappe, Md./Easton) took the loss in net, but registered five saves.

Saint Francis wraps up its 12th varsity season at Quinnipiac on Sunday, opening draw is scheduled for Noon.
