BOX SCORE 2 LORETTO, Pa. (April 22, 2013) – After honoring its four seniors on Monday afternoon, the Saint Francis U softball team swept a pair of Northeast Conference games against visiting Wagner by identical 4-2 scores.
Wagner (11-33, 2-14 NEC) got on the board first in game one, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first. Saint Francis (22-22, 4-8 NEC) answered in the third, plating all four of its runs in that frame.
Misty Hammel (Oakville, Ontario/Holy Trinity) and
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) each collected singles in the inning, putting two runners on base for
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) to launch her third homerun of the season to right center.
The Flash picked up one more run when
Karlie Miller (Wildomar, Calif./Temescal Canyon) connected on a RBI double that scored
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola). The two-bagger marked Miller's 100 career hit with the Red Flash.
The Seahawks got one back in the top of the sixth and were poised for more after loading the bases with just one out. Heads up defensive play though by Hammel and Kachnovitz ended the Wagner threat on a lineout 4-6 double play.
Rex got the call in the circle and game one and improved her pitching record to 6-5 on the season. She threw five strikeouts in seven innings pitched, surrendering just the one earned run on three hits.
To kick off game two, the Red Flash got some help from three Wagner errors in the bottom of the first that allowed SFU to bring three runners across home plate. Saint Francis tacked on another run in the fourth when
Brianna Garcia (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) singled in
Samantha Thomas (Sterling, Va./Park View) from second to put the Flash up 4-0.
Wagner scored a run in the fifth and again made things interesting in the late goings on the game. The Seahawks drew back-to-back walks to open the top of the seventh and advanced those runners into scoring position on a groundout fielder's choice play. Kristen Matteoni then lined a double down the left field line that plated just one run. With base runners still on second and third and one out, two consecutive ground ball outs secured the 4-2 win for SFU.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) earned her 15th pitching victory of the year after tossing all seven innings in which she gave up two earned runs on just five hits.
SFU's 22 wins on the season ties the team's win total from the 2012 campaign.
Saint Francis embarks on a non-conference road trip to Bucknell on Wednesday for a doubleheader with the Bison beginning at 3 p.m.
