BOX SCORE 2 AKRON, Ohio (May 1, 2013) – Playing in its road and non-conference finale, the Saint Francis U softball team earned a two-game split with Akron on Wednesday. The Zips took game one 10-4 and the Flash held on in game two for a 6-2 victory.
The Zips (22-25) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on the Red Flash (23-28) in game one after two innings of play.
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) led off the top of the fourth by drawing a four-pitch walk and used her speed to swipe not only second, but third base as well. Three strikeouts however stranded Kachnovitz in scoring position.
Kachnovitz did some offensive damage in the fifth after
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) reached on an error that scored a run and kept the inning alive. With runners on second and third, Kachnovitz blooped a single to center field that plated two runs and tied the game at 3-3.
The tie was short lived however when a two-RBI Zips triple that bounced off the right center field fence put Akron up 5-3. The Zips struck for two more runs in that frame and a three-run homerun in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead.
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) launched her fifth homerun of the season in the top of the seventh for SFU's fourth and final run of the contest.
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) got the start in game one and fell to 6-9 on the year. Rex's four strikeouts thrown gives her 71 on the season, which sets a new career-high.
SFU served as the home team in game two and a leadoff homerun and Flash throwing error in the top of the first put Akron up 2-0 early on. In the next half inning, the Red Flash knocked in a three-spot to take a one-run lead.
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area),
Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) and
Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson) all picked up RBI's in the frame. Cosentino's RBI double marked her team-leading 60
th hit of the season.
Saint Francis struck for more runs in the bottom of the second when Neeb launched her second homerun of the day, a three-run shot to left, that put SFU up 6-2. With the long ball, Neeb ties Kachnovitz for the team lead in homeruns with six. The remainder of the game went scoreless.
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) earned her 16
th pitching victory of the season after tossing all seven innings and surrendering just the two runs in the first inning.
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) went a perfect 5-for-5 on the day, legging out a number of infield singles.
Saint Francis returns home to close out the 2013 regular season starting on Saturday with a pair of games against Sacred Heart beginning at 1 p.m.
