BOX SCORE 2 LORETTO, Pa. (May 4, 2013) – The Saint Francis U softball team split a Northeast Conference doubleheader with Sacred Heart on Saturday. The Red Flash lost game one 10-3 but were victorious in game two 4-2.
Red Flash (24-29, 5-13 NEC) errors in the top of the second of game one allowed Sacred Heart (24-27, 5-13 NEC) to score three runs in that frame. SFU got one back in the third on an RBI single the left field by
Taylor Darneille (Fircrest, Wash./Wilson). A strong top of the fourth however that was capped off with a bases clearing double by SHU's Annie Dreher allowed the Pioneers to plate six runs in that frame and take a 9-1 advantage.
Darneille collected her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth when she lined a double to left that scored
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area). The Flash got one more run across in the final inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Kate Blattenberger (Martinsburg, Pa./Central) but Saint Francis was bested in game one 10-3.
All three SFU pitchers were used in game one, but
Ketarah DeVries (Forreston, Ill./Forreston) suffered the loss, dropping her pitching record to 16-16 on the year. DeVries tossed three innings while
Chelsea Rex (Philipsburg, Pa./Philipsburg-Osceola) and
Brooke Koch (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) each threw two frames a piece.
In game two the Red Flash plated a run early in the bottom of the first when
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) smacked a grounder up the middle, scoring
Maggie Creciun (Norristown, Pa./Norristown). Saint Francis then put up three runs in their next at-bat in the bottom of the second.
Davina Kachnovitz (Bear, Del./Glasgow) chopped a hard hit ground ball to the Pioneers shortstop with two outs, but the fielder couldn't make the play, allowing two runs to score. After Kachnovitz advanced all the way to third on the previous play, Cosentino drove her in with her team-leading 62
nd hit and 27
th RBI of the season.
Sacred Heart cut the lead down to 4-2 in the third when Nicole Sidor launched a two-run homer to left field. That was all the Pioneers managed to get in the game however, leaving Saint Francis with a two-run victory.
Koch got the start in game two and improved her pitching mark to 2-4 on the year. Koch threw all seven innings and gave up the two earned runs on just five hits with three strikeouts.
Saint Francis concludes the regular season with a home doubleheader against Quinnipiac on Sunday beginning at noon.
