BOX SCORE HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – (Sept. 15, 2013) After playing a hard fought double overtime game the Saint Francis U men's soccer team tied 0-0 Oakland University to end the Marshall Invitational. The Red Flash went 2-1-1 over their four game road trip; their only loss coming against Loyola 1-0.
"I thought today's game could have ended 3-3," said Head Coach
Michael Casper. "Both teams had good chances at goal and both keepers had to make some good saves. Oakland is a good team and I am pleased with the shutout."
Leading the Red and White with three shots, two on goal, was freshman defender
Matt Loughnane (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford).
Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) and
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) both had two shots, registering one shot on goal respectively.
The first half rendered several opportunities for both squads, Saint Francis (4-1-1) edged Oakland (1-2-3) in the shot column (5 to 4) and in corner kicks (4 to 3).
Golden Grizzlies Matt Dudley's corner kick proved to be the last threat in the second period following a Red Flash foul.
Oakland out-shot SFU 12-to-10 with six coming in the second half off five corner kicks.
In extra periods both teams struggled, SFU putting up one shot each extra period, as Oakland recorded two in the second overtime.
Keeper
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) claimed his second shutout in the tie; collecting five saves while three shots recoiled off the post. Oakland goalie Sean Lewis also recorded fives saves.
"This has been a real tough stretch with five of our first six games on the road, so although we are never happy with a tie I am pleased with how the guys have handled the early part of the season," said Coach Casper. "We will be happy to come home and get ready for another important game against Niagara."
