A Brace From Kolarac Leads Saint Francis Past The Purple Eagles

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – (Sept. 22, 2013) Senior Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) claimed his third game-winning goal of the season as the men's soccer team blanked Niagara University Purple Eagles 2-0.

"I thought the guys played really well today," said Head Coach Michael Casper. "It's been nice to come back home from the road and have a good performance today."

Kolarac posted a game-high and season-high in shots, taking seven. Two reached the back of the net giving him six goals on the season. At the thirteen-minute mark freshman Matt Loughnane (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Trafford) delivered a threatening ball to Kolarac who's touch guided the ball past the out-stretched hands of Niagara's keeper Brenden Ottman, placing the Red Flash on top of the Purple Eagles 1-0.

Six-minutes later at the twenty-minute mark, Loughnane earned a penalty kick after being hacked down inside the Niagara box. Kolarac stepped up and hammered the spot kick past Ottman extending the lead to 2-0.

The intensity of the game started to rise as Niagara conceded back-to-back-to-back yellow cards at the forty-minute mark. The Purple Eagles received six yellow cards in the match out-doing the Red and White in fouls 12-to-4.

Goalie Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) recorded his third shutout of the season, while collecting four saves off of Niagara's seven shots.

"We created a lot of chances in the second half and set the tone with our pressure and position," said Casper. "We are very happy to get the 2-0 shut-out victory at home. Overall we are pleased to get the win, but we still have a long way to go and a lot of improvement to make toward the end of the season." "We'll take the win and look forward to Howard on Friday."

Saint Francis out-shot the Purple Eagles in the game 20-7, 13 coming in the second half.

The Red Flash face Howard in Washington D.C. Friday Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. looking for their sixth victory of the season.
