BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. – (Sept. 29, 2013) After failing to capitalize on several scoring opportunities the Red Flash experienced their first home setback to Duquesne 1-0.
"The hard thing about today is I thought we played relatively well, but still lost," said Head Coach
Michael Casper. "Sometimes soccer can be a funny game in which the team with more possession and more chances doesn't always win."
Duquesne (5-4) picked up their first road victory against a talented Red Flash (6-2-1) squad.
Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) near goal seven-minutes into the match was one of many scoring chances squandered on the afternoon by the Red and White.
Ryan Merrifield, a late substitution for the Dukes placed a header past the Red Flash goalie
Daniel Valcicak (Herndon, Va./Gonzaga College) that would have given Duquesne a 1-0, but an errand Duke defender was offsides saving Saint Francis. The scored remained tied 0-0 going into the second half.
The difference maker was Austin Lange's shot into the lower right corner giving the Dukes a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the game. SFU failed to find the equalizer after holding a 6-to-2 second half advantage over the Dukes in corner kicks and a 13-to-9 advantage in shots taken.
"We created a number of very good chances, but we have to do better with them in order to win games like this," said Coach Casper. "This is a hard lesson, but one if we learn now will make us better down the road."
Leading the team with five shots was senior
Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) with three shots on goal. Byers and
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) both had in two shots for the Red Flash.
Saint Francis travels again on Wednesday to University Park, Pa. where they will play Penn State at 7 p.m.
