LORETTO, Pa. - (Sept. 3, 2013) Senior midfielder Nick Kolarac (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) and freshman forward Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) were awarded Northeast Conference honors after leading the Saint Francis men's soccer team to a (2-0) start. Kolarac was awarded Men's Soccer Co-Player of the week award following his impressive three-goal showing against William & Mary and Canisius. Sjekloca was named Northeast Conference Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week following his stellar performance versus Canisius College.
Kolarac scored three goals, including both game-winners, as Saint Francis U raced out to a 2-0 start with wins over William & Mary and Canisius. Against the Tribe, the Pittsburgh native, broke a scoreless draw in the 62nd minute when he corralled his own rebound and knocked it in for the 1-0 road victory. He then struck twice in SFU's home opener against Canisius, a 4-1 win in favor of the Red Flash. Holding a 1-0 lead at the break, Kolarac cashed in the game-winner with just three minutes elapsed, scoring from five feet out to make it a 2-0 game. He then blasted a shot from distance to close out the scoring in the 63rd minute.
Sjekloca got the ball rolling for Saint Francis U in its game against Canisius at home. The first-year forward from Belgrade, Serbia tickled the twine for his first collegiate goal and a 1-0 Red Flash lead in the first half. SFU would go on to win the game 4-1 and improve to 2-0 on the season.
The men's soccer team hits the road Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match against Bucknell (0-1).
