BOX SCORE FAIRFIELD, Conn. (Oct. 24, 2014) -- Two second half goals drove the Saint Francis U men's soccer program past the Sacred Heart Pioneers 2-0 Friday afternoon. The Red Flash shutout at Campus Field pushes their win streak to five straight against the Pioneers.
"I thought we were solid today," said head coach
Michael Casper. "Sacred Heart is always a tough place to come into and get a win, so I am very pleased with the guys. I thought we controlled most of the game and I am happy the boys were rewarded with two goals and a shutout."
Senior
Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) scored his second game-winning goal of the season in the contest as the Red Flash denied Sacred Heart their first Northeast Conference win. Byers netted his fifth goal of the season from a perfectly weighted pass from fellow upper classman
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies). Medina fed Byers a ball still leaving Byers with a bit of work. After bringing the ball under control Byers drove a shot to the far post beating the Pioneers keeper, making it 1-0.
Saint Francis continued to press the Pioneer defense forcing a second goal in the 86th minute.
Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic) found the back of the net off a great ball from
Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern). Rezende passed McGhee a ball from midfield to the far sideline much like Medina's to Byers previously. McGhee took Rezendes' pass and finished with a shot to the far post.
Conner led the Red Flash squad with five shots, two coming on goal.
Medina continues to climb the national chart in assists, the senior entered the game ranked ninth in the nation. With nine assists on the year, Medina is now in a eight player tie for second place.
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) remains atop the NEC leader board in saves claiming his seventh shutout of the season.
Saint Francis flexed their offensive power for the second consecutive game outshooting the Pioneers 16-to-6.
The Red Flash remain atop the NEC standings with 12 points following their win.
"I thought we were relentless tonight in pursuit of a goal," said coach Casper. "Sometimes when you control a game and don't score before halftime you can get frustrated, but we stuck to the task and found two good goals. We are excited about the win, but we know we need to continue to grow, learn and get better for next weekend."
