BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Nov. 16, 2014) –The Saint Francis U men's soccer team fell at home to St. Francis Brooklyn, 2-1, in the Northeast Conference Championship game Sunday afternoon at DeGol Field.
Â
"My heart is broken right now," said head coach
Michael Casper. "Sometimes soccer is a cruel game as I thought we were the better team today. Â St. Francis Brooklyn played hard, defended well, and found a way to get it done today. Â I wish them all the best in the NCAA tournament. Â I am proud of our team, proud of our effort, and just really disappointed because I felt like our boys deserved more out of the game. Â But, the truth of the matter is, we didn't finish our chances, couldn't convert our opportunities and we gave them a chance to steal the result." Â
Â
In the 42nd minute
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) gave the Red Flash the one-nil lead on a penalty kick.
Â
The Terriers quickly responded tying the game a minute later in the 43rd minute on a Cyril Coisne penalty kick after a SFU handball inside the box.
Â
Despite being tied at the half, the Red Flash outshot the Terriers eight to two and held the advantage in corner kicks three to nil.
Â
The Red Flash started the second half with five shots before the Terriers took their first, but neither team produced the deciding goal forcing the game into overtime. The Red Flash outshot the Terriers 15-to-7 in regulation.
Â
Conner Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) led all players with four shots. Red Flash teammates
Calvin Rezende (Davie, Fla. /University School at Nova Southeastern) and
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) had three apiece.
Â
Andy Cormack scored the Golden Goal for the Terriers off a set piece from 20 yards out in the 4th minute of overtime. Â Cormack slotted the ball into the top left corner past diving SFU keeper
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional).
Â
"I thought the support from the campus, our alumni, and our fans was incredible, I want to thank them for coming, being loud, and making it a special environment for our boys," said coach Casper. "I just wish we could have sent them home happy celebrating a championship. I want to thank all of our seniors for all the work they have done, the commitment they have made, and for progressing Saint Francis soccer during the tenure. Â We are a better program because of them and they will be missed. "
Â
St. Francis Brooklyn has won back-to-back NEC Tournaments and will represent the NEC in the NCAA tournament.
