PHILADELPHIA (March 24, 2014) – The Saint Francis U men's tennis team ran its winning streak to three on Saturday as it evened its record at 6-6 with a, 6-1, decision over La Salle.
"Coming off of two big conference wins last weekend, I was a little worried the guys might have a bit of a let down today. We also had a couple guys playing today that haven't gotten in the lineup much this year. So I was proud of how they and the rest of the team stepped up and kept their focus and energy up against a scrappy La Salle team."
The Red Flash won the first two doubles matched to clinch the first point of the day.
Chris Jimenez (Bayside, N.Y./St. Francis Preparatory) teamed with
Sergio Carvajal (Nueva Esparta, Venezuela/U.E. Fray Elias Maria Sendra) to pick up an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 spot,
Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) and
Juan Pardo (Bogota, Colombia/Colegio Andino) edged the Explorers, 8-7(4).
In singles play, Saint Francis made quick work of the La Salle lineup, winning the first five matches. The Explorers finally broke the shutout with a Brian Balico win in the No. 6 spot.
Gervais,
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School), Jimenez, Carvajal and
Kyle Korus (Toronto, Ontario/Niagara Academy) swept the first five singles matches to ease to the win.
"We'll look to keep building off of this as we face Rider and Villanova next weekend."
