BOX SCORE NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (April 11, 2014) – Led by sophomore
Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East), the Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team nearly completed a seven-goal comeback against Central Connecticut State on Friday evening. Fini erupted offensively as she tied a career-high with five goals and added two assists, but SFU fell, 11-10, on the road.
The Red Flash (4-7, 1-2) outscored the Blue Devils (5-7, 2-1) 7-2 in the second period after trailing by six at halftime. Fini also scored five goals in a game last year against Central Connecticut.
Central Connecticut State started the scoring in the game, first by tallying one just 21 seconds into the contest. Fini answered two minutes later with her first of the night to put Saint Francis on the board. CCSU then went on a seven goal run over a 25 minute span to take a commanding 8-1 lead.
Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) then scored on a free position attempt to end the scoring drought for Saint Francis with 2:26 to go in the half. CCSU scored once more before the break and SFU tallied one with just three seconds remaining as
Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) found the back of the net. The Red Flash trailed 9-3 at the half.
Saint Francis scored the first goal in the second half, it was
Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) who scored off a pass from Fini. The Blue Devils put two more on the board to take an 11-4 lead with 16:57 to play before SFU went on its run.
The Red Flash scored six straight goals with four of them coming from
Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East).
Blair Rosenberg (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) and
Rachel Larson (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) also each scored and SFU was within one with exactly four minutes to play.
The Red Flash did not record another shot in the game as CCSU controlled possession down the stretch after forcing a turnover.
Larson and Conwell led the team in draw controls as the seniors had four and three, respectively.
Savannah Shores (Trappe, Md./Easton) and
Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air) each logged 30 minutes in goal, Shores finished with six saves, while McKee added three.
Saint Francis will look to bounce back against Bryant on Sunday, the game is scheduled for a Noon start.
