BOX SCORE 2 BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Saint Francis softball team got out of a sticky first inning situation in the second game of its NEC doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Blackbirds cleanup hitter Ariana Lopez lined out to
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson). She then tagged the LIU runner before she could retreat to third base for the second out. Confusion over whether or not Witthus caught the ball on the fly caused her to throw the ball to first, and the LIU runner at second broke for third.
Sabrie Neeb (Front Royal, Va./Skyline) fired the ball back to Witthus who applied the tag for a 5-3-5 triple play.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth, when the Flash scored three runs after two outs. Neeb walked and
Chelsy Cosentino (New Kensington, Pa./Kiski Area) reached on an infield single.
Elise Jancef (Wilson, N.Y./Wilson) stepped up and hit her first career home run to left field. The Flash held the 3-0 lead.
LIU Brooklyn came back in its half, hitting a solo shot to lead off the inning and a grand slam later in the frame as part of a six-run at-bat.
Neeb drew the deficit to 6-4 with her fifth home run of the season in the top of the sixth, but the Flash couldn't pull any closer.
Taylor Parsons (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle) had two hits to lead the Flash. It's her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
Game one had a totally different feel as both pitchers dominated, allowing a combined eight hits.
Alexis Bower (Cogan Station, Pa./Williamsport Area) threw for the Flash, striking out four while allowing just five hits in her six innings. Two Blackbird doubles in the third inning pushed a run across, and that would be all the scoring necessary in the 1-0 final.
The Flash will open the home portion of its schedule against Central Connecticut on Friday.
