Heather McKee (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright Bel Air), the Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team nearly came back against Robert Morris. SFU fell, 13-11, on Friday afternoon.
The Red Flash (4-10, 1-4) outscored the Colonials (10-4, 4-1), the Northeast Conference's second place team, 6-3, in the second period.
Casey Burk (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) led Saint Francis with four goals and an assist. Jessica Karwacki led RMU with five goals and 11 draw controls, while her sister, Corey, scored four goals.
Robert Morris quickly started things off in the opening period scoring just 34 seconds into the game. The Colonials scored again before SFU got on the board, it was Burk who scored her first of the day off a feed from
Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury).
RMU went on to score five goals in just over two minutes time to take a 7-1 lead with 24:13 to play. The Flash' second goal came from
Rachel Larson (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) off a pass from
Christina Fini (Huntington, N.Y./Smithtown East). RMU then scored three more unanswered goals to hold a 10-2 advantage.
Saint Francis closed out the first half on a 3-0 run, it was Burk who got it started off a pass from
Holly Lawrence (Damascus, Md./Damascus).
Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) then scored back-to-back goals and SFU trailed 10-5 at the halftime break.
Robert Morris struck first in the second half before
Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) scored one for SFU and it trailed 11-6. The Red Flash fired home two more goals as Fini and Burk each tallied one, Saint Francis trailed by just three with 19:23 to play.
Each team traded goals over the next 15 minutes, the two for SFU were from Burk and Larson and the Flash trailed 13-10 with just over three minutes to play. Conwell tallied a goal with 15 seconds to play.
McKee finished with 17 saves in 45 minutes of playing time, as she did not start the contest.
Rebecca Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) led SFU in draw controls with two.
Mackenzie Mignery (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) registered a team-high three caused turnovers.
Mignery and
Kimberly Gronski (Corning, N.Y./Corning East High) each posted four ground balls to lead Saint Francis. Robert Morris converted on 6-of-8 free position attempts, compared to a 0-1 mark for SFU.
Saint Francis hits the road for a one-game stop at Mount St. Mary's next Friday (April 25); the game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
