Strong Start Not Enough for Red Flash Against Pioneers

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (April 6, 2014) – The Saint Francis University women's lacrosse team held a four-goal lead in the first half, but fell to Sacred Heart, 14-10, on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Red Flash (4-6, 1-1) scored the first four goals of the game and led at halftime, but surrendered nine second half goals to the Pioneers (3-7, 1-1).
 
Danielle Conwell (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury) led Saint Francis with four goals and two assists, while Casey Burk (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) added three goals and Rachel Larson (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) put up two.
 
Burk scored off a free position attempt to start the scoring for SFU a minute into the game. Conwell scored her first of the afternoon about four minutes later and the Flash led 2-0.
 
Conwell scored again a couple minutes later, followed by Larson who scored her first off a good pass from Lindsay Ingram (Stewartstown, Pa./York Catholic) and Saint Francis led 4-0. Sacred Heart scored twice, one coming from Shelby Vaccaro who posted four goals for the Pioneers.
 
The Larson/Ingram connection struck again as SFU put its fifth goal of the first half up with 16:07 to play. The Pioneers scored two more to narrow the deficit to just one with 7:46 to go in the opening period.
 
Conwell scored another and then the Pioneers scored with one minute remaining in the half, SFU held the 6-5 lead going into the break.
 
Sacred Heart scored the first five goals of the second half and took its first lead of the game. The Red Flash scored its first goal of the second period at the 15:33 mark as Katie Schaaf (Ellicott City, Md./Hebron) tallied one.
 
The Pioneers scored again four minutes later and retook a four-goal lead. Burk then scored for Saint Francis off a feed from Conwell with 10 minutes to play.
 
Sacred Heart put up three goals in less than two minutes to take a 14-8 lead with under seven minutes to go. Burk scored her third of the afternoon again from Conwell, followed by Conwell scoring her fourth of the day to get back within four.
 
Mackenzie Mignery (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Bradley) posted a game-high four controls and Kimberly Gronski (Corning, N.Y./Corning East High) added a career-high six grounds balls. SFU also led in shots, 21-18.
 
Saint Francis is back in action on Friday as it makes the trek to Central Connecticut State for a 7 p.m. match-up.
