BOX SCORE PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Aug. 31, 2014) – Saint Francis U men's soccer team suffered their first loss Sunday afternoon, against the Duquesne University Dukes 4-2.
"Today we conceded two goals in the first 15 minutes and were under the gun from then on," said head coach
Michael Casper. "Credit Duquesne for playing to their strengths and putting us under a lot of pressure."
Duquesne (1-0-1) held an early 2-0 lead courtesy of two Austin Lange goals.
Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) put Saint Francis (1-1-0) on the board at the 16-minute mark. Vega sliced a redirected ball into the bottom left corner, placing SFU within one goal of the Dukes at halftime.
The Dukes found the back of the net twice before the Flash could respond in the second half.
Down 4-2,
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) played a corner kick in the front of the Duquesne goal.
Bryan Causey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) applied the right touch, placing Medina's ball in the upper right corner to draw the Flash within two.
"I thought in the second half we picked it up, but we have to realize that it takes hard work, effort, and commitment to be successful," said coach Casper. " I know our team can play, and if we add that other side we will be ok."
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere), Vega, and
Stefan Sjekloca (Belgrade, Serbia/Fryeburg Academy) led SFU with two shots a piece in the game.
The Dukes had four yellow cards in the contest to SFU's one.
Lange finished the game with three goals.
Saint Francis's next match is against Bucknell Sept. 3 at 4 p.m.
