BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 12, 2014) -- Saint Francis U defenders
Bryan Causey (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) and
Mitch Kavlick (Erie, Pa./Erie McDowell) connected with forward
Brendan McGhee (Pickering, Ontario, Canada/St. Mary's Catholic), contributing to the Red Flash 1-0 victory over William & Mary. McGhee received Kavlick's ball from the far post and drove it home past William & Mary's diving keeper.
Â
"I thought we started the game exceptionally well and put them under a lot of pressure," said head coach
Michael Casper. Â "Brendan scored a very good goal and I thought it was well deserved as we controlled most of the play over the first 45 minutes. Â It was probably the best 45 min we have played all season. Â In the 2nd half, William and Mary really turned up the heat against us and made things difficult. They locked us in, and we had to defend for our lives. That being said, I thought the back four did very well and limited their opportunities."
Â
Saint Francis men's soccer team earned its second consecutive win this season and remains undefeated against The Tribe.
Â
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) received his third shutout of the season warding off three William & Mary balls. Give credit to the SFU backfield for keeping The Tribe at bay. William & Mary attempted six shots in the contest due to the Red Flash defensive threat.
Â
SFU held a considerable advantage over The Tribe outshooting them nine to four in the first half. William & Mary returned the favor blanking the Flash on corner kicks. The Tribe shot six in the contest.
Â
McGhee led the Frankies with three shots.
Â
The Tribe received three yellow cards in the game.
Â
"William and Mary have a really good team, and to beat a team like that on our home field should hopefully build the confidence of the group and propel us forward," said coach Casper. "We are excited about this result, but we know that tomorrow this win will earn us nothing, and we have to prepare well over the next couple of days for a very good team in Penn State on Tuesday. Â Â
Â
The Red Flash return to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Penn State, looking to repeat last years showing.
