BOX SCORE WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 20, 2014) – A
Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) penalty kick in the 49th minute lifted Saint Francis U men's soccer over George Washington 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
Junior forward
Andrew Hajec (Corry, Pa./Corry) gave the Red Flash (4-3-0) an early 1-0 lead in the 8th minute when he sliced the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal from the right side of the box.
Pablo Medina (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academies) and
Ryan Byers (Scottdale, Pa./Southmoreland) were credited with the assist.
The Colonials (3-2-0), coming off an upset win against No. 22 Navy on Tuesday, did not wait long before finding the equalizer. In the 16th minute Tobi Adewole, who led George Washington with three shots, headed the ball past the Red Flash keeper
Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) after receiving the ball from teammate Andri Alexandersson's free kick.
de Vries' 49th minute penalty kick was the game winner of the match. The Christchurch New Zealand native collected his second game-winning goal of the season.
Saint Francis U outshot the Colonials 8-1 in the second half and 14-6 overall.
"I thought the guys did well today," said head coach
Michael Casper. "It was a very physical game and in order for us to do well, we had to match and surpass their effort so that we could play the type of passing game we hope to. I thought some of our combinations today were excellent and we really dictated tempo with our quality. The only negative is that we couldn't find the 3rd goal to make life a little easier, but I am still pleased with the performance."
Medina led the Red Flash with six shots and
Conner Rezende () made his presence known by adding three of his own in his Saint Francis debut.
Garcia picked up his fourth win of the season.
Saint Francis U returns to action Thursday September 25 at home when they face the University of Hartford at 3 p.m. Hartford currently holds a 3-2-1 record on the season.
