SFU Cages Tigers in Home Opener

BOX SCORE LORETTO, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2014) - The Saint Francis University field hockey team is off to its best start in program history after picking up a 5-1 win over Towson in the home opener on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Flash (3-0) is undefeated after three games for the first time in its 14-year history after the victory over the Tigers (0-3) at DeGol Field.
Saint Francis scored just one goal in the first period of play, but really put it all together in the second half scoring four goals in the final 11 minutes.

Carissa Makea (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosehill College) scored three of the goals for the Red Flash, including the first goal of the game seven minutes in off a penalty corner pass from Nikki Snyder (Harveys Lake, Pa./Lake-Lehman). Saint Francis tallied 11 more shots in the opening frame, but could not find the back of the net again in the period and held the 1-0 advantage at halftime.

SFU fired 15 shots total in the second period and Autumn Pellman (Millerstown, Pa./Greenwood) scored SFU's second goal at the 59 minute mark off a rebound from a Makea shot. It was then Makea again who scored off a penalty corner pass from Snyder at 61:23 to give SFU the 3-0 lead.

Makea put her third in of the day four minutes later after she weaved passed a defender, turned around, and fired a shot past Towson keeper Megan Boyle and SFU was up 3-0.

The Tigers got on the board for the first time a minute later as Morgan Skavdahl scored for Towson. Freshman Shannon Pereira (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Francis Libermann Catholic) scored the first goal of her collegiate career off a rebound in front of the net with just seconds remaining to give SFU the 5-1 lead.

Saint Francis finished the game with 26 shots compared to just four from Towson. The Red Flash also held the significant advantage in penalty corners, 15-2. Samantha Zeiders (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) posted two saves in net for SFU.

Saint Francis returns to action on Saturday as Siena comes to Loretto for a 1 p.m. match-up.
