BOX SCORE JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Lorenzo Jerome (Sunrise, Fla./J.P. Taravella) returned the opening kick 98 yards for a touchdown and the Red Flash never looked back as they earned a 58-9 win at East Tennessee State. The Red Flash finished non-conference play with a 3-2 record, its first winning record in non-conference games since 1992.
It was also Saint Francis' first non-conference road win since Sept. 15, 2012 against Morehead State.
The Red Flash scored 58 in a game for the first time since Sept. 27, 2014 vs. Virginia-Lynchburg. SFU's 38 points in the first half were also its most since that game, when they scored 63.
SFU also held an opponent without a touchdown for the first time since Virginia-Lynchburg.
Saint Francis totaled 336 yards, including 108 rushing yards. The Red Flash defense held ETSU to 185 yards, with 173 of those coming in the second half.
Junior
Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) completed 13-of-17 passes for 175 yards, a touchdown and ran for another score. Senior
Khairi Dickson (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland Central Catholic) led the rushing attack with 72 yards and a score on 13 carries, while sophomore
Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) had 46 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries. Junior
Wesley Nagaseu (Waipahu, Hawaii/Waipahu) also contributed a rushing touchdown.
Terell Smith (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland) hauled in six catches for 148 yards and a touchdown, his third 100-yard game of the season.
On the defensive side, the Red Flash had three interceptions, with two returned for touchdowns. Sophomore
Robert Miller (Coral Springs, Fla./Taravella) and freshman
Sean Orsini (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) each had pick-six's. The first time in Saint Francis history with two interceptions returned for touchdowns in the same game. That gives SFU three interceptions returned for touchdown in a season, joining
Delondo Boyd (Indian Head, Md./Henry E. Lackey)'s 35-yard return vs. Georgetown. Jerome also had an interception, his second of the season.
SFU had three picks in a game for the first time since Nov. 15, 2014 vs. Robert Morris.
Senior
Semo Sila (Honolulu, Hawaii /Farrington) led the squad with 11 tackles, including four solo and two for loss. Sophomore cornerback
Jalen Wells (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) had a career-high eight stops, while Boyd and
Max Ma'afala-Maiava (Pearl City, Hawaii/Aiea ) each had six tackles. Freshman
Louie Gartner (Paramus, N.J./Paramus Catholic) had a big day, with 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks with a forced fumble.
Saint Francis held the Buccaneers to just 12 yards in the first half on 34 plays. ETSU finished the half with 20 yards passing and -8 rushing yards. The Red Flash totaled 175 yards on 29 plays, but got three interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns.
Jerome gave Saint Francis a big boost to start the game, returning the opening kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown. Jerome took the kick, broke a few tackles, and ran it up the right sideline into the end zone.
Junior
Lance Geesey (Harrisburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) added a 28-yard field goal with 8:38 left in the first quarter, extending his SFU record to 33 career makes. He also had seven extra points on the day, just two short of his career-high for a game.
On the following ETSU possession, Miller, a safety, picked off a pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Geesey's extra point gave Saint Francis a 17-0 lead with 7:02 remaining in the opening frame.
East Tennessee State got two points on a safety after a bad snap that
Zack Drayer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey ) fell on in the end zone.
Dickson added his fourth rushing touchdown of the season on a 13-yard rush with 14:52 left in the 2
nd quarter. The drive began after an interception by Jerome, which he returned to the ETSU 20.
Drayer gave Saint Francis its fourth score of the day with a seven-yard touchdown run on a scramble. It was Drayer's first rushing touchdown of the season. A trick play to start the drive saw Jerome, a former high school quarterback at J.P. Taravella, hook up with Smith for a 53-yard reception. Four plays later, Drayer broke through for the touchdown.
On the ensuing Buccaneers drive, the Red Flash got another pick-six on an interception as linebacker Orsini returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown. SFU went into the break with a 38-2 lead.
A 37-yard connection from Drayer to Smith opened up the scoring in the second half. Five-yard pickups by
Daniel Adams (Washington, D.C./Northwestern) and
Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) as well as two 15-yard penalties helped the Red Flash on the drive.
Nagaseu, who normally starts at nose tackle, got his first opportunity of the year on the offensive side. The junior scored on a six-yard run after gaining 16 yards on a rush on the previous play. The touchdown put SFU up 51-2 with 14:21 left in the game.
ETSU got their first touchdown of the day on a six-yard run by quarterback Austin Herink on a read-option play.
Saint Francis responded with a two-yard touchdown run by
Marcus Bagley (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights), his first of the season. Drayer completed three passes on the drive, with 14 and 28-yard receptions by
Daniel Adams (Washington, D.C./Northwestern) and a six-yard catch by Smith.
