Red Flash Track & Field Alum Brittni Smallwood Carves Spot in Buffalo News History

BUFFALO, NY – Former Red Flash sprinter Brittni Smallwood has had a knack for finding her way into the record books, with two Top-10 all-time performances for Saint Francis' indoor track & field team in 2007.

In 2015, not much has changed, as Smallwood finds herself making history once again - this time off the track.

Smallwood was recently named the anchor of the 8 a.m. edition of Buffalo WNLO-TV's "Wake Up!," becoming the first African-American to regularly anchor a weekday news program in Buffalo in roughly two decades.

When Alan Pergament of The Buffalo News asked Smallwood about her place in Buffalo's local TV history she responded, ""I'm really excited and humbled to not only represent the African-American community, but all communities as well."

"Buffalo is unique," said Smallwood, "because so many people are loyal to the news and news personalities. People just enjoy the news personalities they have because they have grown an attachment to them."

Outside of her anchoring position with WNLO, Smallwood primarily serves as a co-anchor and reporter for sister station WIVB.

Smallwood graduated from Saint Francis in 2008 with her bachelor of arts in English/communications and a minor in Spanish before going on to attend Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. She graduated with her Master of Science in Broadcast Journalism in 2009.
