Hartford Snaps Men's Soccer Unbeaten Streak in 2OT

HARTFORD,  CONN- Francis de Vries (Christchurch, New Zealand/Cashmere) scored the equalizer in the 86th minute, but a Hartford goal with just 48 seconds left in double overtime sent the Red Flash home with a 2-1 heartbreaking loss on Sunday.

The loss snaps the six-match unbeaten streak that Saint Francis was riding coming into the match and now sit at 4-2-3 on the season. The Hawks improved to 4-3-2 with the OT win.
The first half was relatively uneventful, the Red Flash outshot the Hawks 5-3 but neither managed many chances. Each team had one shot on goal in the opening 45 and the match was scoreless at the half.

Saint Francis looked to pressure in the early stages of the second half, but each of their five shots sailed wide of the target or would get blocked by the Hawks' defense. Hartford broke through in the 62nd minute. Off a free kick, Andri Jonasson re-directed the kick with a header and put the Hawks up 1-0.

The Hawks would continue to pressure following the goal, earning two corner kicks and forcing senior goalkeeper Andrew Garcia (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional) to make a pair of saves, keeping it a 1-0 contest. Saint Francis would get their own set pieces late in regulation. Following a pair of corner kicks, de Vries would head home the equalizer off a throw in and a Nick Hanuscin (Cinnaminson, N.J./Bishop Eustace) feed. The tally in the 86th minute forced overtime.

In the first extra frame, neither team was able to do much, with Saint Francis having the best chances. Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) had a shot go wide and a late corner kick went for naught. In the second overtime, Andres Vega (Managua, Nicaragua/Colegio Centro America) put a shot wide and Hartford turned up the pressure. The Hawks took four shots in the second overtime and Garcia was able to make one save. Following the Garcia save, a low cross was sent into the box and Jeff Tryon put home the game-winner.

The Red Flash return home to wrap up non-conference play with a pair of matches. First up is Duquesne on Wednesday at 3p.m., the game will also be aired on NEC Front Row.
