Men’s Tennis Falls 5-2 at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Francis men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision against Dayton on Saturday at the Five Seasons Sport Club.  The Red Flash won a tight doubles point, but the Flyers captured five of six singles matches.  SFU is now 9-7 on the year.
 
Junior Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) and freshman Robin van der Heijden (Burgh Haamstede, Netherlands/Scheldmond College) competed at the No. 2 spot against Simon Jayaram and Bernardo Sanson.  In a tough set, the Red Flash duo won 7-6.  It was their third win of the spring.
 
At the third spot, junior Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) battled Graham Reinhold and Lorenzo Rollhauser.  The SFU pair helped clinch the doubles point with its own 7-6 victory.  Avuski and Suntar improved to 13-3 on the season.
 
Sophomore Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior Washi Gervais (Longueuil, Quebec/College Stanislas) matched up at the top spot against Zach Berry and Carsten Fisher. In another tight set, Foo-Kune and Gervais came up short, 7-6. 
 
At the No. 6 singles position, van der Heijden faced Reinhold.  The SFU rookie claimed the first set, 6-4.  In a tough second set, van der Heijden came out on top, 7-6, including 8-6 in the tiebreaker to capture his sixth win of the spring.
 
Gervais competed at the top singles spot against Fisher.  The Red Flash senior fell 6-3, 6-1.  He is now 11-6 this season.
 
The SFU sophomore, Foo-Kune, met the Flyers' Berry at No. 2.  However, Foo-Kune dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
 
Tico matched up against Dayton's Sanson at No. 3.  In a tight opening set, Tico came out on top, 7-6, with an 8-6 tiebreaker.  Sanson won the second set, 6-2.  In the deciding set, Tico fell 7-5. 
 
In the fourth position, Suntar took on Jayaram.  The SFU rookie fell 6-2, 6-2.
 
At No. 5, Avuski competed against Rollhauser.  In straight sets, Avuski fell 7-6, 6-3.
 
Saint Francis wraps up the regular season next weekend.  On Friday, SFU competes at Wagner in a 3 p.m. NEC match.  The Red Flash has a doubleheader on Saturday, taking on NEC foe St. Francis Brooklyn at 10 a.m. and Hofstra at 2 p.m.
