DAYTON, Ohio – The Saint Francis men's tennis team earned a 6-1 win at Wright State on Sunday to improve to 2-0 on its season-opening weekend. The Red Flash won the doubles point and five singles matches. Wright State dropped to 0-2 on the season.
"This was another solid win for the guys," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "I feel like we made an effort to improve on several things in doubles that we did wrong yesterday. We definitely need to work on some things, but I like that we tried to come out of our comfort zone in order to do the right thing so we can improve."
At the top doubles spot, junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) matched up against Javier Alvarez de la Villa and Donovan Cellupica-Towers. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 victory. Foo-Kune and Tico improved to 1-1 this spring.
Freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and sophomore
Robin van der Heijden (Burgh Haamstede, Netherlands/Scheldmond College) competed at No. 3 against Carlos Estrada Sanchez and Jason Holloway. The SFU pair dominated in a 6-0 win. Luna and van der Heijden are also 1-1 this spring.
In the match at No. 2, freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) took on Fernando Nardelli and Jacob Perkins. However, the SFU duo fell 7-5 to drop to 1-1 in dual matches.
Foo-Kune faced Alvarez de la Villa at the top singles position. The SFU junior won the opening set, 6-2. He clinched a straight-set victory with a 6-4 second set. Foo-Kune picked up his second singles win this year.
At No. 2, Luna matched up against Nardelli. The Red Flash rookie earned a 6-4 win in the first set. He bettered that performance in the second set to win it, 6-2. Luna is now 9-3 overall in singles.
Dell'eva competed against Estrada Sanchez at No. 4. The SFU freshman claimed a 6-1 victory in the first set. In the second set, Dell'eva won 6-2 for a straight-set victory. He improved to 7-1 in singles this year.
In the match at No. 5, senior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) met Cellupica-Towers. In a tight opening set, Cellupica-Towers came out on top, 7-6, including 8-6 in the tiebreaker. Avuski bounced back to win the next set, 6-3. In the super-tiebreaker set, Avuski earned a 10-6 victory. Avuski is now 9-2 overall in singles.
At No. 6, Suntar took on Holloway. The Red Flash sophomore won the first set, 6-1. He dominated the second set to win, 6-0. That was Suntar's seventh singles win of the spring.
Tico competed against Perkins at No. 3. The SFU senior fell 6-3, 6-2 to drop to 1-1 in singles this spring.
"In singles, I saw a lot of positive things," said Castille. "Everyone competed well, which is something I always stress. Overall, I was pleased with the way the guys played this weekend against two good teams."
The Red Flash returns to action next Saturday at Howard for a Noon match.
