FDU sinks SFU 2-1 in double overtime

BOX SCORE Loretto, Pa. - The Saint Francis men's soccer team (7-6, 0-2 NEC) took a second-half lead thanks to a goal by senior Troye Kiernan (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), but couldn't make it stand in a 2-1 double overtime loss to Fairleigh Dickinson (7-4-1, 1-2 NEC) on Friday at the Stokes SoccerPlex.

Moore's Reaction

"I thought we were on top of the game early but we didn't put our chances away and ultimately it cost us," said head coach Antony Moore. "We are only two games in and can only focus on the games we have left to play. We will rely on the seniors to step up and lead us as we get ready for Sunday."

Turning Point

The elation from Kiernan's goal soured quickly as the Knights tied the game three minutes after the Red Flash took its first lead.

Highlights
  • The Red Flash dominated the majority of the play in the first half. Kiernan was in the center of most of the action, nearly scoring the opening goal on two separate occasions. His first opportunity was a shot from 25 yards out that swerved just wide of the post.
  • Freshman Lucas Rosa (Atibaia Brazil/COC Atibaia) set up the other scoring chance, freeing himself of an FDU defender with his dribble and rolling into Kiernan's path. The midfielder cut back inside onto his right foot but rolled his shot to the Knights' keeper.
  • The Knights came out strong in the second half. They had their best flurry of chances in the 57th minute, but were denied twice by saves from senior goalkeeper Marcus Rojas (Fremont, Calif./Bellarmine College Preparatory).
  • After making a fingertip save on a shot from Jacob Lavoitz, Rojas dove to his right to keep out a header on the ensuing corner.
  • Kiernan  gave SFU a brief lead in the 67th minute. Rosa delivered an in-swinger into the box. The service was cleared to Kiernan who ripped a half-volley into the top corner for his fifth goal of the season.
  • Fairleigh Dickinson responded with a goal from Labovitz in the 70th minute as the forward beat a Red Flash defender, rounded Rojas, and scored from a tight angle.
  • Daniel Lasarte won the match for the Knights with 3:48 remaining in the second overtime, lacing a shot from 25 yards out into the top corner.
Notes
  • After outshooting Fairleigh Dickinson 7-1 in the first half, the Red Flash were outshot 16-7 the rest of the way. FDU finished with a 17-14 advantage for the match.
  • Kiernan and junior Mario Mastrangelo (Venetia, Pa/Peters Township) led SFU with four shots apiece.
  • Kiernan and sophomore Kyle Moerschbacher (State College, PA/State College) put a team-high two shots on goal.
  • Shots on goal were 7-6 for FDU.
  • SFU held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Saint Francis is off to its first 0-2 start in NEC play since 2008.
  • The last time Saint Francis was two games under .500 in conference play was in 2011 when it started 1-3. SFU would close conference with a 5-0-1 record over its final six.
