PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Saint Francis men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Temple on Saturday. The Red Flash won one doubles match and two singles matches. SFU is now 6-3 this season, while the Owls improved to 6-6.
"We came up against a Temple team that competed hard today," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "We had our opportunities in doubles, but unfortunately couldn't convert. We battled well in singles and had chances to win in a lot of those matches, but we couldn't make the most of those opportunities."
Freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) combined at No. 2 doubles against Temple's Artem Kapshuk and Thomas Sevel. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-4 win 3-1 this spring.
At the top doubles spot, junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and senior
Rodrigo Tico (Guadalajara, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) met the Owls' Florian Mayer and Vineet Naran. The SFU pair fell 6-1 and is now 6-3 in dual matches.
Senior
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) competed at No. 3 against Francisco Bohorquez and Uladzimir Dorash. However, Avuski and Dell'eva dropped a 6-4 result.
Tico took on Temple's Mayer at the No. 4 singles spot. The Red Flash senior came out on top, 7-6, in a tough opening frame, winning the tiebreaker, 7-5. He then won the next set, 6-4, to clinch the straight-set victory. Tico improved to 5-4 this spring.
At No. 6, senior
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) met the Owls' Eric Biscoveanu. The SFU senior won a tough opening set, 7-5, but Biscoveanu responded by winning the second set, 6-2. In the super-tiebreaker set, Cerdan came out on top, 10-6. He moved to 4-1 in dual matches.
Foo-Kune faced Temple's Kapshuk at the top singles position. The Saint Francis junior fell 6-2 in the first set, but bounced back to win a tough second set, 7-6, including 6-2 in the tiebreaker. However, Kapshuk won the deciding set, 6-2. Foo-Kune is now 5-4 this spring.
Luna battled TU's Sevel at No. 2. The Red Flash rookie claimed the opening set, 7-5, but Sevel responded by winning a 7-5 set of his own. In the final set, Sevel came out on top, 6-3. Luna is now 7-2 this spring.
Dell'eva competed against the Owls' Dorash at No. 3. The SFU freshman fell 6-4, 6-3 and is now 4-1 in dual matches.
In the match at No. 5, Suntar took on Temple's Bohorquez. The SFU sophomore dropped the first set, 6-0, but bounced back to win the next set, 6-2. Bohorquez won the deciding set, 6-3. Suntar is 7-1 this spring.
The Red Flash will travel to Lehigh tomorrow for an 11 a.m. match. The Mountain Hawks are 2-5 this season.
