BOX SCORE 2 Waco, Texas - The Saint Francis softball (9-5) went 0-2 on day two of the Baylor Invite on Saturday, losing to No. 24 Baylor 7-4 and to SIU-Edwardsville 4-2.
Jennifer Patrick-Swift's Reaction
It wasn't our day today," said head coach
Jennifer Patrick-Swift. "We didn't play a complete game in either of our games. Our goal is to come out tomorrow and play our best ball from pitch one until the last out is made."
Game One
The No. 24 Baylor Bears took advantage of a seven-run second inning to build an insurmountable lead. The damage came on three walks, a hit batter and four hits.
Junior
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) barreled up her fifth home run of the season in the third inning, a three-run screaming line drive to left to pull SFU within four, 7-3.
Senior Ketarah DeVries pitched well in relief, holding the Bears scoreless over the final four innings.
Sophomore
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) led off the seventh inning with a double and scored on a sac fly by junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton), but that was all the Red Flash could muster as they fell 7-4.
Game Two
Saint Francis clashed with SIU-Edwardsville in the nightcap with a chance to advance and play Baylor in tomorrow's championship game.
Things got off to a promising start for the Red Flash as senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) worked three scoreless innings.
Sophomore
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) opened the scoring in the fourth with a towering shot to right field, her second homer of the season. Two pitches later,
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) turned on a pitch and sent it over the wall in left for her first of the year and back-to-back home runs.
The Cougars put runners on 1st and 2nd in the bottom of the fourth inning. A two-out double scored one, but a perfect relay from
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) to Seneca to the plate nailed the runner at home to preserve a 2-1 lead.
SIU-Edwardsville had another opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth when they put the tying run on third, but freshman catcher
Taylor Hoover (Phillipsburg, Ohio/Northmont) picked her off and senior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) chased her down in the run down to apply the tag just before she touched the plate.
The Cougars finally broke through in the sixth. The leadoff hitter reached base off Santai chasing her from the game in favor of DeVries. The next batter reached on a bunt and then a double steal put two runners in scoring position. A single tied the game and then two more bloop singles allowed SIUE-Edwardsville to build a 4-2 lead.
Cougar pitcher Haley Chambers-Book finished the game off with a 1-2-3 seventh inning to notch the complete game victory.
