BOX SCORE 2 Arlington, Texas - The Saint Francis softball team (11-6) salvaged a split in its doubleheader at UT Arlington (9-7) on Tuesday, winning game one 6-3 before dropping game two, 6-0.
Game One
The Mavericks opened the scoring with two runs on four hits in the second inning. They tacked on another run in the third on a bases loaded two-out single up the middle.Â
Sophomore
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) ignited the offense with a leadoff single in the fourth inning. It was the theme of the game for SFU as the Red Flash opened five of the seven innings with singles.
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed Norton's hit with a walk to put two runners on. After a pop up and fielder's choice advanced both runners one base, junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) delivered a two-out single to get the Red Flash on the board. Saint Francis threatened for more but senior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson)'s hard liner was caught by a diving third baseman to end the inning.
Redshirt freshman
Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) singled to open the fifth inning and
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) followed with a walk. Junior
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) then made sure Saint Francis didn't squander this scoring opportunity by lacing a three-run homer to left center, her team-leading sixth of the season, to put SFU in front 4-3.Â
An rbi single by
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and a bases loaded walk by senior
Kelsie Marconi (Lowber, Pa./Yough)Â upped the Saint Francis lead to 6-3 in the sixth. That was more than enough insurance for freshman
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan) who didn't allow a runner to reach base in her 2.2 innings of relief to earn her first career save.Â
Senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area) earned the win to move to 4-0 on the season. She pitched 4.1 innings and allowed three runs.
Game TwoÂ
The Saint Francis bats were held in check in game two as the Red Flash only registered two hits off UT Arlington pitcher Sam Clakley. Saint Francis fell behind 4-0 after two innings and yielded six runs on just three Maverick hits through the first four innings.Â
Marconi and Witthus collected the Saint Francis hits. Trahan was once again stellar in relief, throwing three scoreless innings.
