GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Saint Francis Men's Tennis team dominated in a 7-0 win over Niagara on Friday at the Greensburg Racquet Club. The Red Flash swept the singles and doubles action without dropping a single set. Saint Francis improved to 9-3 this Spring, while Niagara fell to 2-11.
"I was happy with the overall performance from the guys today," said Head Coach
Rob Castille. "We came out a little slow in doubles but managed to get the win on all three courts. We found a way to win the important points while not playing at our best. This is something we can definitely take some confidence from."
Junior
Alec Dylan Foo-Kune (Phoenix, Mauritius/International Connections Academy (Md.)) and freshman
Franz Luna (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Laurel Springs) combined at the top doubles spot against Niagara's Francis Nadeau and Taylan Odzemir. The Red Flash duo earned a 6-2 win to improve to 2-0 this Spring.
In the match at No. 2, freshman
Arturo Dell'eva (Verona, Italy/Sanchez Casal Tennis Academy) and sophomore
Jan Vit Suntar (Cerklje na Gorenjskem, Slovenia/Gimnazija Kranj) met NU's Chris Grossi and Josh Wilson. The SFU pair picked up a 6-4 win and is now 3-2 in dual matches.
Seniors
Plamen Avuski (Plovdiv, Bulgaria /Math High School ) and
Eli Cerdan (Bloomfield, N.J. /Saint Mary High School) competed at No. 3 against the Purple Eagles' Brent Boleslav and Lukas Wenninger. With a 6-4 win, Avuski and Cerdan completed the Red Flash doubles sweep. Avuski and Cerdan are now 6-0 this season.
At the top singles position, Foo-Kune took on NU's Odzemir. The Saint Francis senior claimed the opening set, 6-1. He won the next frame, 6-2, to complete the straight-set victory. Foo-Kune is now 8-4 this Spring, playing all of his matches at No. 1.
Luna faced the Purple Eagles' Nadeau at No. 2. The Red Flash rookie took the first set, 6-2. He dominated the second set, winning 6-0, for the sweep. Luna improved to 10-2 this Spring.
Another freshman, Dell'eva, competed at No. 3 against Niagara's Boleslav. In the opening set, Dell'eva won 6-3. He repeated that performance in the next set to complete the straight-set victory. He is now 7-1 in dual matches.
Avuski met the Purple Eagles' Wilson in the match at No. 4. The SFU senior dominated the first set, 6-0. He followed that with another 6-0 win in the second set. Avuski moved to 8-2 this Spring.
In the match at No. 5, Cerdan took on Niagara's Wenninger. The Red Flash senior claimed the first set, 6-3. In a quick second set, Cerdan came out on top, 6-0. He is now 5-3 in dual matches.
Suntar competed against NU's Grossi in the No. 6 matchup. The SFU sophomore took the first set, 6-2. He completed the sweep with a 6-4 win in the second set. Suntar improved to 9-1 this Spring.
"We were very clinical in singles and never really allowed Niagara into the match," said Castille. "I was pleased with the patience and point construction we showed. We can definitely build on this and take it into our match against Mount St. Mary's on Sunday."
The Red Flash competes in its second NEC match of the season on Sunday when it hosts Mount St. Mary's at The Club Sport and Health in Monroeville. Mount St. Mary's is 1-5 this season.
