BOX SCORE Lubbock, Texas - Junior
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) became just the 11th player in NCAA history to hit two grand slams in the same game as she took over the NCAA lead with home runs number 13 and 14, as the Saint Francis softball team (22-8) outlasted Texas Tech (13-12) 12-10 on Friday night in a three hour and 15 minute back-and-forth slugfest. Junior
Madison Cabell (Ivor, Va./Southampton) delivered the game-winning hit with a two-run single up the middle in the eighth inning.
Jennifer Patrick-Swift's Reaction
"We fell behind by a large margin early but our hitters truly believe there isn't a deficit they can't overcome," said head coach
Jennifer Patrick-Swift. "Ethel came in and did a good job executing her pitches against an offense that is strong from top to bottom. Jordan's two grand slams were shots, but I told the team that they would not have been grand slams without people doing their jobs to get on base. It was a great way to start the weekend and a great win against a team from a  Power-5 conference."
The Red Raiders scored five runs in the second inning off freshman starter
Abby Trahan (Kaplan, La./Kaplan). After a bases loaded walk plated the first run, Kiana Workman drove a pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam and 5-0 Texas Tech lead.
Jordan Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) answered with a grand slam of her own in the top of the third. Senior
Kindra Witthus (Hudson, Wis./Hudson) led off the inning with a single up the middle and redshirt freshman
Halle Marion (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) moved her to second when she was hit by a pitch. Sophomore
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) lined a pitch to left in the next at-bat to load the bases for Seneca who jumped on a pitch and drove it over the wall in left.
Texas Tech used the long ball again in the bottom of the third inning to up its lead to 8-4 on a single, walk and three-run homer.
Seneca struck for her second grand slam in as many innings and her third in the last three games in the fourth to tie the ballgame at 8-8.
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) allowed the inning to stay alive with a two-out single to shortstop to set the stage for Seneca who deposited the pitch even deeper over the left field fence. She has hit five home runs over her last four games.
Texas Tech regained its lead in the bottom of the fourth. Senior
Ethel Santai (Pine Grove, Pa./Pine Grove Area)Â came in to pitch with the bases loaded and no outs and retired three straight after walking the first batter she faced to put Texas Tech in front.
The Red Raiders loaded the bases off Santai again in the bottom of the fifth with no outs but she struck out two and got another out via a batter's interference call to keep the home team off the scoreboard.
The Red Flash had nobody on and two outs in the 6th when Texas Tech elected to pitch around Seneca. Sophomore
Hayley Norton (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) responded with her seventh home run of the season, a line drive bullet over the wall in right center, to give Saint Francis its first lead at 10-9.
A single, Saint Francis error and sac fly to center allowed Texas Tech to tie the game at 10-10 in the bottom of the sixth. The Red Raiders had runners on second and third with two outs when Santai ended the inning with a key strikeout to send the game into the seventh inning tied.
Both teams went quietly in the seventh and then
Cheyenne McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) opened the eighth with a leadoff single, her third hit of the game. Seneca walked and Norton fought off a single to right field to load the bases with no outs, but
Sierra McKee (DuBois, Pa./DuBois) and
Kassidy Troxell (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) struck out swinging. Cabell picked up her teammates by singling the eighth pitch of the ensuing at-bat up the middle to bring in two runs and give the Red Flash the 12-10 lead.Â
With one out and a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth, Santai got a ground ball to Troxell at third. She fired to first to get the out and Cabell relayed the throw home to get the runner from third at the plate and give the Red Flash the victory.
Santai improved to 6-1 on the season by allowing just one run on four hits over 4,2 innings.
Seneca came into the game in a tie for the national lead in home runs and in third place in rbi and did nothing two hurt her standing with two home runs and eight rbi.
McKee entered the game tied-for-seventh in hits and added three more. Cabell and Norton added two hits.
Saint Francis entered the week receiving a vote in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches' Poll and has now won 10 straight games.
